German Onion Pie

I love onions. I can’t get enough of them and put them in pretty much every dish!

The health benefits coming from an onion are amazing. I posted about it a few months ago (click here to see the article).
If you never had an Onion Pie, you definitely need to try it. The sweetness of the onion evolves so perfectly in this dish and combined with the creaminess of the filling and crunchiness of the crust, this is a dish that will be enjoyed by the whole family!

Originally you make this dish with a yeast bottom, but since I had no time the day I made it, I decided for the “cheater-version” of it and used a store bought pie crust 😉

Ingredients:

  • 1 9 inch pie crust
  • 1 lbs onions, cut in rings (use different kinds of onions, to give it some color and textures)
  • ½ pound bacon cubed
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • ⅓ cup sour cream, fat free
  • 2 eggs
  • ¼ teaspoon nutmeg
  • salt and pepper to taste

Directions:

Preheat your oven to 395°F

Press your unbaked pie crust in your pie form, set aside

Place the onion rings in a large microwave safe dish

Top with bacon or smoked pork

Spray onions and meat with cooking spray and microwave on high for 10 minutes

Meanwhile in a large bowl mix together the heavy cream, sour cream, eggs, nutmeg salt and pepper

Combine onion/meat mixture with cream mixture

Pour in pie crust and bake for 40 minutes
