I found this stuffing recipe scrolling through my Facebook one day and since Thanksgiving was just a few short weeks away at the time I decided to try it out.
The original recipe I found was making the whole thing from scratch, including drying out your own bread (2 loafs of white bread to be exact). But we had some pre-dried bread crumbs that had been acquired some time previously just waiting around, we used that instead.
Melt 1 stick of butter in large skillet, add 4 stalks finely chopped celery and 1 finely chopped onion, saute until tender. (Tender for me was being able to break the celery in half with my stirring utensil.)
Approximately 2 loafs of dried bread crumbs.
The crumbs we used were pre-dried and they came in this size, I actually ended up breaking most of the pieces into smaller bits to make it easier to mix everything together and to make it all fit into one bowl.
Pour saute mixture over bread crumbs.
Add 3/4 Teaspoon salt, 1/2 Teaspoon sage, 1/4 Teaspoon poultry, 1/4 Teaspoon pepper seasonings.
Add 1 can turkey or chicken broth slowly until bread sticks together, but not too sticky.
For us it took the whole can to get the sticky ratio that I thought was acceptable, it might take more or less depending on your preference.
Shape stuffing into balls and bake until browned.
We used an ice cream scoop to get the “ball” shape.
I didn’t keep track of how long it took ours to cook but I just kept checking on it every 15 minutes or so.
This was our finished product. In my opinion it turned out almost exactly like the store bought kind, but made twice as much as one box and cost about the same, when feeding a big family on a budget that’s really all one can ask for.
