Everyone uses a basic white sauce mix. Make this White Sauce Mix, keep it in your refrigerator. Whenever you need a basic white sauce mix it will take 2 minutes to whip it up. I will include several recipes on how to use this mix. Here we go!

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups instant nonfat dry milk, or 1/1/2 cups regular nonfat dry milk
  • 1 cup flour
  • 2 teaspoons salt
  • 1 cup butter or margarine

Directions:

Mix together dry milk, flour and salt. With a pastry blender, cut in butter (margarine) until you have fine crumbs. Store in refrigerator for 2 months. Makes 1 quart of White Sauce Mix.

Basic White Sauce

  • 1/2 cup white sauce mix
  • 1 cup water

In saucepan combine white sauce mix and water. Cook over low heat until smooth, stirring constantly. Season with pepper, fresh herbs or spices. For a thicker sauce use 3/4 cup white sauce mix.

TIP: Substitute milk, chicken or beef stock, tomato juice for water.

Mushroom Sauce

  • Add 1/2 cup finely chopped mushrooms
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce.

Cheese Sauce

Add 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese or mozzarella cheese after sauce has thickened. Stir until cheese melts.

Celery Sauce

Saute 1/4 cup diced onion and 3/4 cup diced celery. Add to sauce.

I use this white sauce as a base for so many dishes. Some of our favorites are Tuna Casserole, Au Gratin Potatoes, Cream of Chicken Soup, Broccoli Cheese Soup, Chowder, well the list goes on and on.

This really is a pantry staple you will use time and time again. Save yourself some time. Keep this White Sauce Mix in your refrigerator at all times. In minutes you will have a white sauce.
