Boston Cream Pie With Dark Hershey’s Chocolate

A pie with perfect vanilla custard spread between two layers of soft cake and covered with rich dark Hershey’s chocolate ganache.

Not too complicated to prepare and yet the taste is excellent, the best combination of vanilla and rich chocolate. I thought, if the cake is so delicious it has to be hard to make it to be beautiful. Now, I know that the hardest thing on this cake is to cut out the slice not damaging the chocolate ganache or to preserve the whiteness of the cake and cream because the chocolate sticks a bit to the knife and spreads all over the slice you’re cutting.

It seems to me, that maybe, the next Boston cream pie I make will be with coffee custard. I’m dying to feel that taste… It has to be exceptional. But the Hershey’s chocolate garnish shouldn’t be forgotten.

For the custard:

  • 3 large egg yolks
  • 1/2 cup 1/2 cup sugar
  • 3 tbsp corn starch
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1 tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the cake:

  • 8 tbsp butter
  • 1 3/4 tbsp flour
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 3/4 cup whole milk
  • 3 large eggs
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract

For the Hershey's Chocolate Ganache:

  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 4 ounces Hershey's special dark chocolate

Instructions

  • Whisk the egg yolks with sugar until the color gets lighter.
  • Add corn starch and salt. Combine with milk and cook on the medium heat while whisking.
  • When it thickens add vanilla extract, butter and leave it to cool. Beat the heavy cream and mix with the cold cream. Now you have got a nice, fluffy and creamy custard for your cake.
  • For the cake, divide the egg whites from egg yolks and whisk them separately.
  • The egg yolks mix with ingredients listed above and add the beaten egg whites stirring gently with a big spoon.
  • Bake in the oven on 350F degrees for 30-35 minutes.
  • Leave it to cool and cut with a dental floss in half. Spread the custard between two layers.
  • Ganache is very simple to make.
  • Put the Hershey’s special dark chocolate with the heavy cream in the microwave oven and melt for a minute.
  • Stir until the chocolate is totally melted and combined with heavy cream.
  • Cover the cake with special dark Hershey’s chocolate ganache and garnish with Hershey’s chocolate you like the most.
