You read the title correct. Sourdough brownies. And yes, they are fudgy and incredibly yummy. If you haven’t made anything like this before you may be thinking something like a bread and brownie combination, which does sound weird, but this has such a nice consistency. You would never think there was a sourdough starter in the batter at all.

This recipe only requires the use of an unfed starter and does not need to leaven like you would with bread. I did not add any baking powder or baking soda to this either. I didn’t want it to rise although there will be a little rise with the starter in it.

All you need for this is a couple bowls, a baking pan, whisk, and of course ingredients. For the starter you will need 1/2 cup with a consistency like a thick pancake batter; almost thick enough it won’t pour but not thick enough you can pick it up with your hands.

If you don’t have a starter you could try adding 1/4 cup extra of flour to see how the consistency works. What the sourdough does is add a little different texture and a slightly different aspect to the taste.

Ingredient:

  • 2 eggs
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • ½ cup sourdough starter
  • 1 stick butter, melted
  • 1½ cups all purpose flour
  • ¼ cup cocoa
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips, optional

Directions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
  2. In a large mixing bowl combine eggs and sugar. Then whisk together with starter and butter.
  3. In a separate bowl combine flour, cocoa, and salt then add to the large bowl and mix. Add the chocolate chips then pour batter into a lightly greased 8×8 baking pan.
  4. Bake 42-45 minutes, until a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.

Can I use a different type of chocolate chips?

Yes, you can use any type of chocolate chips you prefer, whether it’s milk, dark, or even white chocolate.

Can I replace the sourdough starter with something else?

You can try adding an extra 1/4 cup of flour for consistency, but the sourdough starter adds a unique texture and taste.

What can I use if I don’t have brown sugar?

You can replace the brown sugar with white sugar, but brown sugar adds a deeper, richer flavor.

Can I make these brownies gluten-free?

Yes, simply replace the all-purpose flour with a gluten-free option.

What size pan should I use?

An 8×8 baking pan is recommended for this recipe, but you can adjust the cooking time if using a different size.

How can I store the leftover brownies?

Leftover brownies can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week, or refrigerated for longer freshness.

Probably the simplest of recipes on this site yet! But I am sure you will enjoy it. I would love to hear what you think of these. Please let me know your thoughts.
